NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA 5

The unrelenting grip of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 comes from several technical innovations.

The bear claw boosts stud(*) operations. The front edge of the tread blocks features a sharp-edged claw-like projection circled by siping, which pre-tightens and supports the stud. The bear claw holds the stud in the ideal position during road contact and braking, as well as in lateral movement. The stud does not twist or give way and thus maximises grip. Especially the grip of the shoulder area, most critical to braking, has improved considerably.

The tread of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5, called quattrotread, features four different kinds of rubber compounds. Nokian Tires is the first tire manufacturer to use this kind of a structure for winter tires.

The use of four different compounds improves driving stability and stud operation. The new tread also dampens tire noise to a pleasant level.

(*) These tires are NOT pre-studded by manufacturer.

As a western Canadian, I drive in snow, packed snow, and ice-polished snow for 5 months a year. Slush, not so much, but definitely lots of drifting snow over packed snow. These Nokian Hakkapeliittas are definitely one of the best investments you can make in secure winter driving. These tires absolutely loft soft-packed and hard-packed snow like cat finding thick upholstery! Definitely not cheap, at around $1400 to outfit your SUV with these Nokians, but if you live in the prairies, I definitely recommend these over Blizzaks and Michelin winter tires. Especially if you drive rural roads where snow clearing us unreliable, you're going to love these Nokians. Lateral grip (turning) is not as strong as stopping grip or accelerating grip, but you shouldn't be taking turns faster than 40 kmh in the snow anyways! Note: these tires are meant for snow, and layers of snow covering ice. They are not as secure on absolute glare ice where there is no snow. Other note: do NOT drive these as summer tires as a way to save money on a tire switch each spring; these Nokians are soft and you will lose tread life by driving on summer roads. And while they are excellent for minimal rolling friction on dry roads, these Nokes do emit a noticeable hum-whine, which can become annoying. In short: don't be a cheapskate! Pony up the money for both dedicated winter and summer tires, and for the cost to switch them twice a year!
