These Series II tires are a little better than the regular Sottozero I had before. The first generation of Sottozeros were the worst winter tires I had in terms of traction in sonwy/icy conditions and treadwear. The Series II are a little better in terms of traction but not as good as other tires I had (Dunlops or Michelins). I live in the Ottawa region, which is a snowy/icy region.

I put a new set of those tires on my car two winters ago as replacements for the outstanding Pirelli winter tires recommended by BMW Canada when I bought the car in 2003. The SottoZeros are lousy as winter tires. I have read the many other reviews on this web site that rave about those tires. I don't know how anyone can be raving about them. With my previous Pirellis, I left everyone behind at icy/snowy intersections. With the SottoZeros, my car struggles to keep up with everyone else in the same conditions - the my car's x-drive saves me from more severe embarrassment. I have to slow down to a very slow crawl when turning corners on icy roads because the SottoZeros offer very little lateral traction on ice. Anything more than one inch of snow mixed with sand/salt on the road and they slop around. I wish that I had never bought those tires and I wish that BMW Canada had never recommended those tires to me in the first place (incidentally, at the time of this writing, they are still recommending them!!!).

Bought those tire to replace the blizzak I had on my Mazda5. Pretty happy with the Pirelli. Better comfort and noise than the blizzak and have approx the same traction.

Use within 3 seasons. Good accel on shallow snow, average winter tire braking in shallow snow. Sidewalls are just the right mix of flex and firmness for control and comfort. Not noisy for me. Running 98's. Absolutely beautiful on dry, wet, slush. Not that bad really on ice! Passable on deeper snow (>4" or 10cm) . Fantastic in cold through very warm (none of the regular winter or ice tire mushy feel like you're driving a ball of rubber bands). Hard cornering (short & quick or long radius, high Gs) is what these are made for. You will be with the pack of generic snow tire owners in deeper snow though. If you don't do much deep snow, but drive your car like you stole it, then this is made for you.
